One of the best things about retirement? Your new flexible schedule. No longer are you beholden to the nine-to-five grind. Take it from a retiree—you have a lot more free time on your hands! Of course, there’s another big advantage. More free time can result in bigger savings! After all, there’s always been a relationship between time and money. It just changes in retirement. 1. Eat out at lunch instead of dinner.

Are you looking for a little-known secret to enjoy a mouthwatering meal at an unbeatable price? Well, let me share a discovery that my wife and I made – dining out for lunch! It’s incredible how we can savor the exact same dishes that are typically priced higher during dinnertime, all while saving some hard-earned cash. But there’s more to it than just the financial benefits. The best part is that lunchtime tends to be less crowded, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the pleasure of our meals. Now that I’ve entered the blissful stage of retirement, I have the freedom to relish these delightful lunch outings. Retirement truly is a blessing that opens up new avenues of enjoyment. And if you’re looking for even more savings, don’t forget about the early bird specials!

2. Join a senior center.

Did you know that older adults who are part of senior centers are actually happier and healthier compared to their peers? And it’s no wonder! They’re wonderful places to meet friends and enjoy a wide range of activities. From arts programs to free lunches to volunteer opportunities, seniors will have their pick of fun, and often FREE, activities! This is a great way for older adults to stay connected to their community and socially active after retirement.

3. Travel during the off-season.

Since retiring, my wife and I prefer to take trips during the off-season. Right after school start is an ideal time. In my experience, the off-season has fewer crowds and better rates! And remember—retirement is when you can be the most spontaneous. Don’t be afraid to take quick trips during the mid-week rather than the weekend. In my experience, this is an easy way to save money.

4. Visit national and state parks.

Did you know that you can buy an Annual Senior Pass for just $20? This will provide seniors admittance to over 2,000 parks across the US. Wow! Talk about a great deal! Note: You must be aged 62 or older to take advantage of the senior discounts. If you’ve been looking something fun and educational to do during retirement, this is your sign. Go and see everything this big, beautiful country of ours has to offer.
