Social Media for Boomers;Boomer Social Networks
Why social media? Boomers were slow to start using social media because they did not see the benefit in it. But now they do and Boomers have embraced social media and are becoming the largest generational group using social media. By connecting with fellow boomers, you can make friends, start new businesses if you’re ambitious, and create relationships that will enrich your life. But the main reason Boomers started using social media is to stay in touch with their families, especially grandchildren.
If you are new to social media, you probably don’t know what is it. I have found the best way is to find out for yourself by starting to use it. It is free to use. Let’s start with the most popular social media types for Boomers.
Facebook.com – I could talke all day about Facebook but you will just have to give it a try! All you need is an email address. It is not difficult and you can’t hurt anything. Go to Facebook.com and start setting up your account. You can always stop and pick up again anytime you want. If you have a child or grandchild they would be happy to help set you up on Facebook. Facebook has new privacy settings that allow you to limit access of the personal data you provide. Also just don’t put info you don’t want someone to see. Facebook is especially good to keep in touch with your family. Then you will connect with your current friends and old friends from high school even.
Twitter.com – OK, it may not be for you. But if it is, you will have a great time. If you are self employed, Twitter can be a big help. If you would like to meet the top people in an industry, Twitter will help. Even more than Facebook, with Twitter you just have to try it for a while to get the hang of it.
Boomer Blogs – read boomer blogs and start blogging yourself. You have the time and it is a good way to let your feeling out, be informative and keep in touch. You can have your own blog or just post comments on blog posts by others. We hope you will get a start by posting comments on this site. Just go all the way down to the bottom of the post and fill the comment form out or click “Leave a comment” link if there is no comment form. On some sites you will need to registered to comment, but on this site you will not. Give it a try, it is fun! We have listed some of the best boomer blogs in the right hand column of this page.
YouTube.com – watch videos and post them to your Facebook page. It is getting easier to post your own video to Facebook.
Flickr is almost certainly the best online photo management and sharing application in the world. Great to post your travel photos.
Podcasts – You can download a podcast to your MP3 player or directly to your computer. A podcast is kind of like a radio broadcast but is downloaded. Podcasts are available of a number of specialize subjects. Check out the Podcast Directory to get an idea of podcast available and download one to your computer and listen.
